Most of us experience a time in our lives when our old ways of coping is just not cutting it anymore. You may feel anxious, overwhelmed or lost. You may be struggling with your relationships and feeling hopeless and confused about what to do to fix it.
I am experienced in working with people who are coping with stress, anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship problems, chronic illness and other life challenges. I will help normalize feelings, reduce shame about what you’re dealing with and help you feel more connected to yourself and those who matter most to you.
Sometimes couples find themselves stuck in patterns that leave them feeling confused and questioning whether or not they matter to each other. When this occurs, they may begin to feel doubt that their partner will be there for them when they need them the most. Feeling unheard, they may wonder if they are safe enough to express their needs, wants or feelings to each other. This can lead to fighting or withdrawal and build fear and/or resentment in your relationship.
I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) to help couples understand and break free from these cycles so that they can reconnect and feel secure and understood by each other. Knowing your partner accepts you, cares about you and will be there for you when you need them most lays the foundation for a secure, loving and long-lasting relationship.
Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime whether it be a car accident, the sudden loss of a loved one, difficulties or abuses suffered in childhood, a natural disaster or an act of violence. Any number of things can happen that stop us in our track.
While many people recover from trauma over time, others may find themselves struggling with long term effects that can cause fear, anxiety, panic, confusion and distress. Having these feelings changes our behavior and ramps up our nervous system. This can lead to problems in our relationships and can literally impact all aspects of our lives.
These effects can last long after the event has passed and are not your fault. They are not because you are weak and can't shake them off. You did not ask for this to happen.
Research has shown that trauma-informed therapies are very effective in reducing the symptoms of trauma and PTSD. I am well trained in many of these therapies including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), Brainspotting, Poly-Vegal Theory (Brain/Body Physiological Responses), EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy), IFS (Internal Family Systems) and Mindfulness/Meditation techniques. Together, we can find a path to healing so you can regain control of your life again.
I offer teletherapy for those who are unable to attend in-person sessions or prefer the convenience of virtual therapy. I find that teletherapy can be as effective as in-person therapy if it is your preference. Teletherapy sessions are conducted securely and confidentially over Zoom.
